YORBA LIDNA – The Yorba Linda girls golf team might not be as deep as it was a year ago, and can’t match the scores that the Mustangs shot last season just yet.

But that doesn’t mean that Yorba Linda still doesn’t have plenty of potential. Wednesday’s Crestview League opener proved that as the No. 8 Mustangs beat No. 2 Foothill, 208-219, at Black Gold Golf Club.

“A 208 is a good start for sure. Some of the girls on this team this year haven’t seen Black Gold that much, they really don’t know the course yet,” Yorba Linda coach Dennis Riggs said.

Brooke Graebe led the Mustangs (1-0, 1-0), hitting seven of nine greens in regulation and all seven fairways to post a 1-under-par 35. She had six pars and two birdies on the front nine of Yorba Linda’s home course.

Brittany Sok added a 36 for Yorba Linda as only two of the seven players who teed off for the Mustangs broke 40.

Yorba Linda, though, still showed some signs of improvement over its performance in the season-opening Rosary Royal Shotgun a day earlier. Sarah Chen shaved five strokes off her Tuesday performance and Jade Braun was three strokes better than she was Tuesday at Western Hills.

“And that is all that we are looking for right now is improvement,” Riggs said. “I still see stuff that they can do better, but that is always the case. This is going to be a fun year.”

Madie Chou shot a 36 for Foothill, dropping her nine-hole scoring average so far this season to 36.5
