Girls basketball: Garden Grove League showdown on Wednesday
Los Amigos and Rancho Alamitos shared the Garden Grove League girls basketball title last season. The Lobos beat the Vaqueros at Rancho Alamitos and the Vaqueros beat the Lobos in their home gym.
Los Amigos and Rancho Alamitos enter Wednesday's showdown at 6 p.m. at Los Amigos High with identical records. Both teams are 10-7 overall and 4-0 in league. First place is on the line.
"We have a little bit of a rivalry with Rancho," Los Amigos coach Sabrina White said. "We tied for the league title last year. They beat us at our home and we beat them at their's. It's gonna be a great (league title) race this year. We both come in with the same record."
White, a West Covina graduate who won a state title at Mt. San Antonio College in 2001, in in her sixth season as the Lobos coach.
"We've been playing a harder schedule this year," White said, "playing probably three or four teams in the top 20 in Orange County this year to kind of toughen up our schedule."
Senior guard Zong Lee, who is among the county's top 3-point shooters, is averaging 18 point per game and junior power forward Olisa Horn is averaging 12 points and 9 rebounds per game to lead Los Amigos.
"Zong Lee has made 53 threes on the season," White said. "She's gotta be in the top three in the county with that. Olisa Horn is averaging 12 points and 9 rebounds per game. She's totally controlling the game without being statistical."
White said senior center Cristina Gomez and sophomore guard Lilibeth Amaya are the top two players for the Vaqueros.
"They are very well coached. This year they really improved on their outside shooting. They aren't just one dimensional and throwing it into the post this year. They kind of changed their game plan this year. They are really stretching the defense. They are one of the best defensive teams in the league."
"Cristina Gomez leads them in scoring. She's their center, their post. She does everything for them. Defensively, she's their last line of defense. Offensively, she's their focal point because she's the closest inside for putbacks. Lilibeth Amaya has given them an outside threat this year that they didn't have last year. She's one of the top shooters in our league. She gives them an outside threat they haven't had in years past."
