Outlook: Mater Dei defeated St. John Bosco, 26-21, in a Trinity League game Oct. 21. St. John Bosco’s other loss was to Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, which is No. 1 in the nation in some rankings. St. John Bosco is in a championship game for the fourth season in a row. The Braves won the Pac-5 Division championship in 2013 then lost to Centennial of Corona the past two seasons. St. John Bosco junior quarterback Re-Al Mitchell has completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,679 yards and 28 touchdowns with nine interceptions. His 63-yard touchdown run last week in the semifinals against Centennial put the Braves ahead to stay in their 49-47 win. Mitchell threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns in that game. Senior running back Terrance Beasley has rushed for 1,136 yards and nine touchdowns. Junior back Demetrious Flowers has rushed for 734 yards and 15 touchdowns. Bosco coach Jason Negro said ball security and field position must work in the Braves’ favor to beat the Monarchs. “When we played them earlier, we lost the special teams battle and we lost two big turnovers,” said Negro, who coached at Trabuco Hills before taking the job at St. John Bosco, his alma mater. “Turnovers killed us in all the games we’ve lost the last couple of years.” Mater Dei is ranked No. 1 in CalHiSports.com’s California top 25, which has Bosco at No. 2, and is No. 1 in USA Today’s computer national rankings. Mater Dei is going for its 10th CIF-SS football title. The Monarchs’ most recent section championship was in 1999. Their last appearance in a CIF-SS final was in 2013, when they lost to St. John Bosco, 34-7, in the Pac-5 final at Angel Stadium. Mater Dei sophomore quarterback JT Daniels has set all sorts of Orange County passing records. His 4,560 yards is an O.C. single-season record, as are his 65 touchdown passes. Daniels has completed 76 percent of his passes. Brothers Osiris St. Brown, a senior, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, a junior, both have 1,089 receiving yards. Osiris has 58 catches, 19 of those for touchdowns. Amon-Ra has 54 catches, 20 for touchdowns. C.J. Parks has 46 receptions and Nikko Remigio has 44. Raphael Jones has rushed for a team-high 644 yards. In the Monarchs’ 48-21 win over Rancho Cucamonga in the semifinals, sophomore Shakobe Harper rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns. Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson said the team recently placed a higher priority on its running attack. “We started reemphasizing to JT that while he might be getting a passing read, let’s go ahead and run the ball,” said Rollinson of Daniels, who has those options as he approaches the line of scrimmage. The Monarchs held Rancho Cucamonga to 35 yards rushing. It is expected that the winner of this game will advance to the CIF State Open Division championship game that will be played at Sacramento State on Dec. 17.
