GARDEN GROVE – Cypress rolled over Los Amigos, 47-20, Friday night at Garden Grove High.
The Centurions’ offense scored on all seven of its possessions as Cypress earned its third win of the year and topped its win total of last season.
“It felt like we had a chance to be a much-improved team this year and so far we are playing like it,” Coach Rick Feldman said.
Dominique Thompson returned the opening kick inside the Lobos’ 20, and the Centurions were in the end zone three plays later when Jeremiah Thompson scored on a 1-yard run.
Los Amigos responded with its only score of the half – a 47-yard quarterback keeper by Steven Hernandez.
But after Hernandez’s run, the Centurions scored 40 consecutive points, including a safety on Los Amigos’ opening series of the third quarter.
The Lobos scored twice on the Cypress backups in the fourth quarter, including a 46-yard touchdown scamper by Hernandez and a 14-yard pass from Hernandez to Joseph Deluna.
Hernandez led all rushers with 154 yards and was 4 of 6 for 53 yards.
Jeremiah Thompson scored twice and rushed for 96 yards while Dominique Thompson caught a touchdown pass and had 92 receiving yards. Alex Ashcraft completed 7 of 8 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown and also had a rushing TD.
“We were young last year, so we all experienced what last year was like,” Feldman said. “They all know what happens if we don’t keep preparing and working as hard; and if we don’t, 3-0 turns into 3-7.”
This is the fourth year in a row these teams have met, with Cypress winning all four and outscoring the Lobos, 146-25.
