SANTA ANA – Sunny Hills ran away with Thursday’s game at Santa Ana Valley High, defeating Godinez, 49-8.

On the first play from scrimmage, Alex Jung took the handoff 65 yards for the score and tacked on a two-point conversion to put the Lancers up 8-0.

The junior finished with 220 yards and five touchdowns on 23 carries.

Senior Brandon Castelo added 143 yards and one score on 19 carries.

Sunny Hills, which improved to 3-0, ran the ball 50 times for 375 yards. Sophomore quarterback Brenden Stanfill threw only twice.

Godinez (0-2) was without senior quarterback Bryan Ibarra (team suspension), who had 3,050 total yards and touchdowns last season. He is scheduled to return next week.

Instead, it was sophomore Patrick McMorris. He completed one pass on seven attempts for 22 yards and ran for 16 yards. McMorris was pressured by the Lancers defense. He was sacked twice and had to throw the ball away several times.

The Grizzlies’ most effective offensive weapon did not emerge until late. Junior running back Andy Sosa had only one first-half carry, but got the ball 10 more times in the second half for a total of 57 yards. Sosa scored all of Godinez’ points, a six-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion late in the fourth.

The Lancers reserves played one snap on offense and made the most of it — junior McAvery Decastro ran the ball 80 yards for a touchdown.

The Lancers ran the offense out of a double-wing set, with no receivers split out wide. Coach Pete Karavedas said his team wants to pound the ball and be the more physical side.
