PLACENTIA – Capistrano Valley crushed Valencia, 34-0, on the strength of Kevin Brown’s 249 yards passing and a physical defense that had seven sacks Friday in a nonleague season opener for both teams on the Tigers’ field.

Brown connected with sophomore Nathan Manning for touchdown passes of 2 and 25 yards and added a 5-yard scoring run. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound senior completed 15 of 27 attempts.

Jude Michinock and Kian Assarpour each had 2-yard touchdown runs for the Cougars, who were 18th in the Register’s preseason rankings.

Valencia was held to 143 total yards, 94 passing and 49 rushing. The Tigers’ swift and strong Jahquon Speed was limited to 64 yards on 23 carries. Capistrano Valley sacked Valencia quarterbacks seven times for 32 yards in losses.

The defeat ruined the first game for Valencia coach Shawn Racobs, who took over the program from longtime coach Mike Marrujo.

Capistrano Valley also had big plays from its special teams.

Justin Buck’s 47-yard punt return to the Tigers’ 24 set up the Cougars’ first touchdown. Brown completed passes to Manning for 9 yards and Michincock for 13 to move to the 2. After a 3-yard loss, Brown ran 5 yards for the score with 52.4 seconds left in the first quarter.

Capistrano Valley’s Michael Dyer returned a punt 30 yards to the Valencia 12 to set up a 3-play drive for a touchdown. Brown hit Manning from the 2 for the score with 8:46 left in the second quarter.

Valencia had one drive deep into the Cougars’ territory.

Kion Lathan returned a kickoff 47 yards to the Capistrano Valley 45. On third-and-15, Terrones hit Sam Lydic for a 36-yard gain to the 14. Speed gained 2 yards on first down, but Capistrano Valley recorded three consecutive sacks to end the threat.

Capistrano Valley drove 79 yards on seven plays for a touchdown on its opening possession of the second half to take a 20-0 lead.

Brown and Riley Kasper hooked up for a 27-yard gain and Brown had run of 19. Brown passed to Manning for a 25-yard touchdown with 9:50 left in the third.
