Corona del Mar breezes to victory, PCL title
COSTA MESA – Corona del Mar claimed sole possession of the Pacific Coast League crown Thursday when it defeated Irvine, 58-13, at Estancia High.
Corona del Mar (8-2, 5-0) will go into the CIF-SS playoffs next week as the league’s No. 1 representative. Irvine finished 2-8 overall, 0-5 in league.
Sea Kings junior quarterback Chase Garbers carved up the Vaquero defense. In fact, the ball never touched the ground. He was a perfect 23 of 23 for 338 yards and five touchdowns.
All five touchdowns were caught by senior wide receiver Peter Bush, who finished with eight catches for 152 yards.
The five scores put Garber at 28 touchdown passes on the year, breaking the school record of 27.
Not to be overshadowed by the passing game was junior running back Jaydin Moses who carried the ball eight times for 149 yards — an average of 18.6 per carry — and two touchdowns.
Senior Curtis Jackson was the key playmaker for the Vaqueros. He ran the ball 10 times for 75 yards and threw a flea-flicker touchdown pass to senior quarterback Joseph Carter.
Irvine sophomore Taeveon Le made the most of his one carry, taking it 15 yards for a touchdown.
Carter finished 6 of 13 for 53 yards with one interception.
