ANAHEIM – Kennedy running back Anthony Johar carried 41 times for 334 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Fighting Irish to a 43-28 victory over rival Cypress in a key Empire League game Friday at Western High.

Kennedy’s victory snaps its seven-game losing streak against the Centurions and puts the Fighting Irish (5-4, 3-1) in a second-place tie with Tustin (7-2, 3-1)

The Fighting Irish take on the Tillers in the regular season finale next week, with the winner getting second place outright and in better position for the playoffs.

“We knew what a big game this was,” Kennedy coach Sean Clark said. “Not only were we playing for our team, but all the teams that came before us.”

Johar’s 6-yard TD run in the first quarter give the Fighting Irish a 10-0 lead.

The senior went on to score on runs of 11, 4, 6 and 46 yards. He also five rushes of 20 yards or more.

“My team honestly kept me up the whole week,” Johar said. “We all stayed positive. We didn’t let anything bother us.”

The Centurions (0-4, 2-7), who have struggled all season, hung tough against their rivals and even led 14-10 early in the second quarter.

Derrick Corso saw action at quarterback and as a receiver for the Centurions and was effective in both positions.

Norris completed 3 of 6 passes for 63 yards and had 10 receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown.
