BUENA PARK – Seventh-ranked La Habra stretched its Freeway League winning streak to 44 games, tying an Orange County record, with a 42-0 victory over Sunny Hills on Friday night at Buena Park High.

The Highlanders (8-1 overall, 4-0 league) equaled the mark set by Mission Viejo from 2000-07. They haven’t lost a league game since the 2006 season.

“The record feels great,” La Habra coach Frank Mazzotta said. “It’s a tribute to all the boys who have played here. I’ve been fortunate.”

La Habra quarterback Eric Barriere had touchdown runs of 43 and 5 yards and threw touchdown passes of 22 yards to Eric Lancaster-Garcia and 5 yards to Prince Ross. Strong-armed and swift on his feet, the 6-foot, 185-pound Barriere completed 11 of 23 passes for 197 yards with one interception.

“There’s nobody better than Eric,” Mazzotta said.

La Habra running back Cortlin Taylor gained 90 yards on four carries, including a 20-yard touchdown.

“CJ is doing a nice job,” Mazzotta said. “When Carlos Martin left, people wondered who would run the ball.”

La Habra led 35-0 at halftime and the game was played with a running clock in the second half. Barriere and the starting offense played only one series in the third quarter, which resulted in Barriere’s touchdown pass to Ross.

Lancaster-Garcia returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

Sunny Hills (4-5, 0-4) put together its only extended drive in the second quarter, moving 68 yards on nine plays to the 9 behind quarterback Malcolm Dixon before four consecutive passes fell incomplete.
