NEWPORT BEACH – Brethren Christian continued its stellar season with a 49-7 victory over host Sage Hill in an Academy League game Friday night.
Junior running back Jordan Leonard carried the workload and stole the show from the opening kickoff. Leonard had 200 yards rushing and five touchdowns before halftime.
Leonard’s first touchdown was a 35-yard scramble at the 6:44 mark in the first quarter. He added scoring runs of 51, 12, 47 and 10 yards during the second quarter.
Brethren Christian (8-1 overall, 1-1 league) extended its lead to 49-0 on Levon Lester’s 76-yard touchdown run with 8:04 left in the third quarter.
Sage Hill (1-8, 0-3) scored its first points when DJ Henry recovered a fumble and returned it 28 yards.
Sage Hill’s David Dewey finished with 152 all-purpose yards.
Brethren quarterback Joey Gutierrez passed for 163 yards.
Brethren’s Dante Sanchez also scored a touchdown from 1 yard out early in the second quarter.
