LONG BEACH – They came in with identical records – both overall and in league – and, as a result, had an equal amount at stake.
But as similar as Los Alamitos and Huntington Beach were at the onset of Thursday night’s Sunset League contest, the body language from each sideline projected how vastly different the two squads were after just four quarters.
The Griffins offense ran rampant against the visiting Oilers, racking up 583 total yards in a 56-10 blowout victory at Veterans Stadium.
Los Alamitos quarterback Jack Telenko accounted for six total touchdowns on the evening. The senior tossed for 254 yards and four scores, and added 55 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
Wide outs Holden Edmondson (133 yards) and Dylan Laurent (73 yards) each caught two touchdown passes from Telenko, while running back Schuyler Whitehead rumbled for a season-high 175 yards on the ground and a pair of rushing scores of his own.
“We’ve gotten healthy and we’ve gotten a lot better,” Los Al coach John Barnes said of the Griffins, who have outscored their past two opponents, 105-10. “The last couple weeks, it’s been good. We win next week, and who knows what could happen.”
Los Alamitos (4-5, 2-2) closes out the regular season against Marina (1-7, 0-3) next Friday, with a win ensuring the Griffins the league’s third guaranteed playoff spot.
Granted they had a tougher schedule to close out the regular season, the Oilers (3-6, 1-3) would have put themselves back in the playoff conversation with a win. Offensively, Huntington Beach turned the ball over four times and defensively it was never able to slow down a Griffins attack that’s finally playing at full strength.
Telenko threw touchdown passeses of 8, 12 and 37 yards in the first half while rushing for a 15-yard score. When Whitehead busted a 71-yard touchdown run up the middle in the closing seconds of the first half, the Griffins took a commanding 35-3 edge into the locker room.
