EASTVALE – Garden Grove allowed Roosevelt to drive 80 yards for a score on the first possession of the game and the Mustangs never trailed in a 42-21 nonleague victory over the injury-plagued Argonauts on Friday night.

Garden Grove (3-2) answered on the ensuing drive when Milak Bilal caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Danny Avila to tie the game.

But Roosevelt (1-4) scored three more times in the first half, including Chris Wilcox’s 15-yard return of a fumbled kickoff return, for a 28-7 halftime lead.

Despite Joseph Camarillo’s 1-yard touchdown run on the first drive of the third quarter, Garden Grove could not keep pace with a potent Roosevelt offense.

Camarillo finished with 98 yards, including a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, on 22 carries.

Bilal caught six passes for 139 yards and the score, and Adam Johnson had five catches for 120 yards.

Avila completed 10 of 20 passes for 235 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Christopher Newman led Roosevelt with 142 yards and two TDs on 16 carries.

Devan Rouse recovered a Roosevelt fumble in the end zone in the first half or the Argonauts’ deficit could have been worse.
