WHITTIER – St. Margaret’s undefeated record remained intact Friday night with a 49-22 road win over Whittier Christian at Whittier College in a nonleague game.

St. Margaret’s (5-0) had 25 players dressed for the game, but the small crew was able to keep pace with the Heralds (3-3) in a fast-paced game in which both teams seldom huddled.

The Tartans were led by sophomore quarterback George Krantz, who had 327 yards in the air on 20-for-32 passing with five touchdowns and no interceptions.

Junior receiver Nicholas Shanks was Krantz’s main weapon, totaling 145 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns and one rushing TD.

Freshman running back Clayton Chalmers took over the ground game for the Tartans in the second half, totaling 69 yards and a touchdown in the half on eight carries, an average of 8.6 yards.

Senior running back and receiver Nick Watase was the main offensive factor for the Heralds. Watase was responsible for 98 of the team’s 190 yards through the air and added 62 yards on the ground.

Sophomore quarterback Quinn Commons completed 18 of 27 passes for the Tartans for 190 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Commons was sacked five times but had two rushing touchdowns.

Whittier Christian junior running back Justin Osborn scored the first touchdown of the game early in the first on a 1-yard punch-in, but the Tartans then scored 35 consecutive points.

The Heralds attempted two onside kicks in the first half, trying to claw back into the game, but both went out of bounds. Another onside kick late in the fourth was recovered by St. Margaret’s.

Whittier Christian employed a little more trickery late in the fourth when junior holder Collin Kociela scored a two-point conversion on a fake PAT attempt.
