SANTA ANA – With its season in critical condition, Segerstrom couldn’t have picked a better time to play its best game of the season Friday night.

Sparked by three touchdown runs by Gus Tinajero and three touchdown passes by Marcos Avalos, the Jaguars rolled past Loara, 50-28, in a key Golden West League game at Segerstrom High.

Segerstrom (2-6, 1-2), which had scored just 80 points all season, totalled a season-best 494 yards of total offense, and kept its slim postseason hopes alive. The victory moved the Jaguars into fourth place in the league standings; they will be one game behind either Ocean View or Santa Ana following their matchup today.

“We’ve got to win them all from here on out,” Segerstrom coach Mike Maceranka said. “It’s do or die. If you’re not 3-2 in this league, you’re out.”

Tinajero turned in a workmanlike effort, rushing for 99 yards and scoring on touchdowns of 9, 10 and 11 yards. Abel Diaz led the Jaguars in rushing with 103 yards as Segerstrom amassed 337 total rushing yards.

The loss dropped Loara to 0-8 overall, 0-3 in league, and ruined a stellar effort by Loara running back Josh Moran, who rushed for 223 yards and two TDs.
