LA HABRA – Sonora continued its hot start to the season and remained unbeaten, routing Whittier Christian, 63-20, in a nonleague game Friday at La Habra High.

The Raiders (5-0) were led by running back Jacob Fimbres, who rushed for 190 yards (12 carries) and four touchdowns, including his team’s first three scores as the Raiders sprinted to a 56-7 lead by halftime.

Teammate Ben Kim also had an impressive game, rushing for 108 yards on 10 carries. His longest came in the second quarter when Kim broke off a 58-yard touchdown run, eluding multiple Heralds before finding the end zone.

Junior quarterback Cole McDonald played only the first half but ended the night with 103 yards on 10-of-15 passing and 84 rushing yards on three carries. His best pass of the night came in the second quarter when he connected with Aashad Womack for a 52-yard touchdown.

The Heralds (0-6) struggled to develop momentum on either side of the ball. Trailing 29-0 in the second quarter, junior Nick Watase got his team on the board when he returned a kickoff 95 yards.

Watase also scored his team’s second touchdown when he caught a 57-yard pass from quarterback Cooper Hughes in the third quarter. Watase finished with five catches for 75 yards.

Unlike the Raiders, the Heralds running game was ineffective and relied heavily on the passing game and Hughes, who finished 17-of-30 for 197 yards.
