GARDEN GROVE – Despite playing a game fewer than most of the county’s best quarterbacks, Rancho Alamitos’ Nick Brown was among the leaders in passing yardage and touchdowns entering Thursday.

It only took him a half against Godinez to push him to the top of both lists.

The senior threw for 414 yards and six touchdowns on 21 of 34 passing – all in the first half – in Rancho’s 55-21 nonleague victory over Godinez at Bolsa Grande High.

Brown also ran in a 47-yard touchdown for the Vaqueros’ first score and finished the game with a game-high 64 yards. Rancho (3-1) led 55-0 at halftime before playing reserves the entire second half.

Brown now has 1,449 passing yards and 21 touchdowns in four games.

“He makes us go,” Rancho Alamitos coach Mike Enright said. “He’s got great receivers and a pretty solid offensive line to go with him. He’s just a very smart football player and stays away from that big mistake, usually.”

Senior Devin Velez caught three of Brown’s TD passes and finished with a 182 yards on seven receptions. Joe Navar added 96 yards receiving, Joseph Lainez had 64 yards and Alberto Meneses chipped in 61.

Godinez (0-5) struggled, only gaining 30 yards and two first downs in the first half, but scored 21 second-half points behind junior running back Richard Perez, who had 56 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
