GARDEN GROVE – A big first quarter powered Cypress past Los Amigos, 41-0, in a nonleague matchup Friday at Garden Grove High.

The Centurions (2-0) used the power-and-speed combo of Taylor Williams and Quinten Pounds to take control early against the Lobos (1-1).

After Williams took a handoff 45 yards into Lobos territory two minutes into the game, quarterback Nick Buras found Pounds for a 4-yard touchdown reception. A failed two-point conversion put Cypress in front, 6-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Centurions caught the Lobos by surprise and recovered an onside kick. A couple of plays later, Pounds found the end zone with a 26-yard run to put his team ahead 13-0.

Pounds had another fantastic performance, finishing with four touchdowns. The senior had seven receptions for 109 yards and had the play of the night as he took a screen pass from Buras and ran past the Lobos secondary for a 62-yard touchdown, giving his team a 34-0 halftime lead.

Williams was the catalyst in a Cypress running attack that totaled 300 yards. The senior running back rushed for 189 yards on 14 carries. His lone touchdown came late in the first quarter, scoring from 24 yards out.

The offense of Los Amigos struggled to garner much of anything, being held to 158 total yards of offense in the game. Senior running back Moby Contreras was a bright spot for the Lobos, rushing for 84 yards on 19 carries.
