BUENA PARK – Sunny Hills used a punishing ground attack and a solid defense to defeat Rubidoux, 29-14, in a nonleague game Friday night at Buena Park High.

Joe Ha had 133 yards on 20 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown run that put Sunny Hills (2-0) up, 22-0, early in the fourth quarter. David Cabral also had 133 yards on 24 carries and touchdown runs of 5 and 3 yards as Sunny Hills rushed for 314 yards. Quarterback Malcolm Dixon threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to McKinley Berger.

“We played lights-out defense for three and a half quarters,” Sunny Hills coach Jon Caffrey said. “We subbed some kids late and they got two touchdowns. We moved the ball on the ground and did what we needed to do.”

Rubidoux (1-1) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on passes from quarterback Aaron McMains to Isaac Herrera (25 yards) and Roosevelt Carroll (49 yards). McMains completed 14 of 27 for 179 yards with one interception. Halfback Ngana Masiva had 111 yards on 18 carries.

Sunny Hills drove 72 yards on 12 plays, all on the ground, for the game’s first touchdown in the second quarter. Cabral dashed in from 5 yards for the touchdown with 5:10 remaining. Dixon’s run for the 2-yard conversion failed. Cabral carried the ball eight times for 45 yards on the drive. Sunny Hills was helped by Rubidoux penalties totaling 25 yards.

Cabral gained 77 yards on 15 carries in the first half. He also had an interception in the second quarter.

Sunny Hills extended its lead to 14-0 on Dixon’s touchdown pass to Berger with 6:20 left in the third quarter.
