WHITTIER – Nic Watase scored three touchdowns and Justin Osborn rushed for 213 yards as Whittier Christian defeated Bishop, 33-25, in both teams’ nonleague opening game Friday night at Whittier College.

The Heralds (1-0) opened the second half by driving 71 yards in only five plays with Noah Evans finishing the drive with a 22 yard touchdown reception from quarterback Cooper Hughes.

Evans finished with 12 catches for 119 yards and added a sack and a tackle for a loss on a fourth down play on defense.

The next two drives were capped off by the quickness of Watase. First who outran the Broncos (0-1) defense on a 39 yard touchdown reception.

He came back less than two minutes later to score on a 5 yard run. Watase finished with 181 yards of total offense.

His backfield mate Justin Osborn was pounding the defense the entire night with his powerful runs, including runs of 42 and 61 yards. The 61 yard run was keyed by a mammoth downfield block from Watase.

While the Herald offense was rolling up 498 yards, the defensive line was dominating the Broncos as they had 19 plays of no gain or a loss of yardage. Bronco quarterback threw four touchdown passes among his eight completions.

After the Broncos cut the lead to one score, the Heralds ran the clock down to 8 seconds left in the game before punting to run out the clock.
