Univeristy claims win in new home
IRVINE – It took a week longer than it probably would have liked, but University can finally claim victory at its new stadium.
Behind a dominant running game, the Trojans defeated La Quinta, 35-0, in a nonleague game Friday night.
It was the first win for the team at its new facility. The Trojans were defeated at home last week by Laguna Beach.
“That's what makes (the win) great,” University coach Mark Cunningham said. “It's a really beautiful facility and I'm really happy for the kids.”
University (1-2) held the Aztecs to negative offensive yards in the first half. It scored at the end of the first quarter when running back Chase Alibrando scored from 6yards.
It was the first of his two touchdown runs on the game.
Tristan Lee Jones and Allahason Jenkins chipped in second-quarter touchdown runs, helping contribute to the Trojans' 236 rushing yards. University took a 28-0 halftime lead.
The Aztecs (0-3) were never able to get anything going on offense, gaining just 81 yards. They were paced by quarterback Gilbert Napoles, who threw for 53 yards.
Cunningham credited his defensive coaching staff for the unit's overall effort.
“We had a good defensive plan and the defensive coaches did a great job getting the kids prepared,” Cunningham said. “We had a good week of practice, so we were grateful.”
Running back John Kang led the Trojans with 69 rushing yards and Jenkins contributed 67. Quarterback Wes Jordan threw for 42yards.
