Work pays off for Dana Hills

Dana Hills vs. El Modena

ocvarsity.com

ORANGE - Dana Hills coach Brent Melbon stressed this week that after suffering two consecutive losses, his club needed to take care of business.

Melbon's Dolphins did that and then some in rolling to a 34-14 victory Friday night over El Modena in a nonleague game at Fred Kelly Stadium.

"We worked harder this week than any other week this season," the first-year coach said. "It was nice to see the kids do everything we wanted them to do."

Dana Hills (3-2) was never challenged as it scored the first 34 points, thanks mostly to the left arm of Duke-bound quarterback Sean Schroeder. He picked apart the Vanguards (1-4) defense, completing 14 of 20 passes for 387 yards and five touchdowns.

Dylan Denso was the recipient of three of those touchdown passes, finishing the night with five receptions for 178 yards. Peter Adams caught three passes for 93 yards, including a 20-yard score, and Brett Giesen scored on a 14-yard screen play.

El Modena scored in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run by Chris Barnett and a 1-yard sneak by Anthony Daniel.

The Vanguards open Century League play next week against Villa Park. Dana Hills begins South Coast League play at No. 9 San Clemente.
