PLACENTIA – A strong running game and a stubborn defense helped Canyon defeat El Dorado, 35-14, in a nonleague game Friday night at Valencia High.

Canyon rushed for 272 yards, while its defense largely held El Dorado in check.

“We have confidence in our run game. We don’t always execute it the way we should, but tonight we were kind of clicking,” Canyon coach Mike Ogas said.

Jesse Lobato (12-yard run) and Christian Downey (9-yard catch) scored touchdowns in the first quarter for Canyon, and Josh Tarango added a 9-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.

Canyon (3-4) extended its lead to 35-0 with two quick scores early in the third quarter. Quarterback Anthony Marquez found receiver Connor Dunn for a 33-yard touchdown pass, and ran for a 43-yard score.

El Dorado (2-5) didn’t give up. The Golden Hawks scored their first points later in the quarter when Robert Arroyo capped an 80-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. Arroyo added a 67-yard touchdown run in the middle of the fourth quarter.

Arroyo finished with 151 yards and the two scores on 22 carries.

Canyon held El Dorado to 112 yards (69 passing) in the first half and 284 for the game.
