COSTA MESA – By any measure, getting through Week 5 would be a victory for Santa Ana’s Jorge Briseno.

The senior running back tore his ACL in the fifth game of his junior year.

On Thursday, Briseno scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 33 seconds left to lift Santa Ana to a 27-24 victory over Calvary Chapel at Estancia High.

The Saints (5-0) went undefeated in nonleague games for the second straight year. They host Orange (4-0) to start the Golden West League next week.

A fumbled exchanged put Santa Ana’s perfect record in doubt. Bryce Debernarde fell on it for Calvary Chapel (0-5), and Josh Koth’s 18-yard field goal put the Eagles in front, 24-21, with 1:32 left.

Briseno made a 32-yard catch to the Eagles 1 before scoring two plays later.

Daniel Nava scored on a 4-yard run to give Calvary Chapel its first lead, 21-14, in the third quarter.

Calvary Chapel ran the ball well behind Aidan Vega, Kevin Pimentel, Marcus Time, Jacob Favaro and David Andrade. Noah Bustillos was the beneficiary, gaining 86 yards on 13 carries in the first quarter.

Santa Ana took a 14-0 lead on a pair of touchdown passes by Damian Macias (three touchdowns). The first came on a 5-yard shovel pass to Jonathan Briseno to open the second quarter. On the next drive, he hit Jorge Briseno over the middle for a 48-yard score.

Calvary Chapel answered with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Robbie Haw to Jonathan Carnevale with 1:29 left in the period.

Debernarde recovered an onsides kick. With the clock winding down, Haw took the snap with six seconds and fired towards the end zone. Payton Rogers got a hand on the pass, secured it, evaded a defender, and scored as the half expired.
