Corona del Mar drove to the PV 20-yard line before another Irwin sack foiled its scoring chances before halftime.

“He (Garbers) is an amazing quarterback. We knew we had to get to him,” Irwin said.

Corona del Mar pulled within 21-13 late in the third quarter after a Max Casper field goal and Garbers’ 5-yard touchdown pass to Tae Le.

Then PV went on a back-breaking eight-play, 90-yard drive, highlighted by Nolls’ 44-yard pass to Irwin on fourth-and-2 at midfield, and capped by Gilbertson’s 3-yard touchdown run.

A sack by PV’s Cesar Gallardo led to Corona del Mar turning the ball over on downs on the PV 20-yard line with 4:04 left in the game, then Gilbertson punched in his fourth scoring run of the game.

“We rarely lose the line of scrimmage, and PV won the game on the line of scrimmage today,” Corona del Mar coach Dan O’Shea said.
