GARDEN GROVE – Ryan Brosnan kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime to lift Trabuco Hills to a 37-34 win over Pacifica on Thursday in the season opener for both at Bolsa Grande High.

Brosnan had missed an extra-point kick and a 42-yard field goal attempt in overtime.

The score was tied, 28-28, at the end of regulation. Pacifica got the ball first – each team gets the ball at the opponent’s 25-yard line and equal number of possessions until one team outscores the other – but could not get a first down on a fourth-down pass.

On Trabuco Hills’ first possession, Brosnan’s field goal attempt was short.

Trabuco scored a touchdown on a 35-yard pass from Tommy Germain to Rennon Misiuk, but Brosnan’s extra-point effort was wide left, leaving the Mustangs with a 34-28 lead.

Pacifica scored on quarterback Ben Jefferson’s 5-yard run, but the Mariners’ missed the extra-point kick.

Trabuco Hills linebacker Nick Friedman recovered at Pacifica fumble that set up Brosnan’s winning kick.

The Mustangs’ Colby Rooker, starting at running back in place of injured Jake Cuero (strained knee ligament), scored on a 7-yard run with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Germain passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another. Chris Ingoglia had eight receptions for 79 yards for the Mustangs.

Jefferson threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns, all to Matt Moslenko, and rushed for 201 yards and a touchdown for the Mariners. Raul Balderas ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for Pacifica.

The Mariners’ first possession produced Balderas’ 28-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead. Balderas, playing safety, had an interception in the second quarter.

Trabuco Hills tied it in the second half on Germain’s 35-yard touchdown run.

Pacifica regained the lead with 34 seconds to go in the second quarter on Jefferson’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Moslenko. The extra-point kick attempt missed, leaving the Mariners with a 13-7 halftime lead.

Pacifica plays Newport Harbor at Orange Coast College next Thursday. Trabuco Hills plays Fullerton at Fullerton High next Friday.
