SVC gives Chambers a victory in his debut
IRVINE - Saddleback Valley coach Brendan Chambers couldn’t have asked for a better start in his coaching debut.
The second quarter is more likely what he will be focused on during practices this coming week.
The Warriors nearly gave up a large first-half lead, helping Crean Lutheran’s offense through penalties, but SVC corrected itself in the second half for a 40-21 win on Thursday at Irvine High.
Running back David Molina scored three touchdowns for the Warriors, while fellow back Dalton Lohman provided 120 rushing yards on eight carries and a score. Lohman’s first two touches set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Molina to open the scoring.
Crean Lutheran (1-1) answered with a 76-yard scoring drive, capped by quarterback Gavin Folsom’s 1-yard TD plunge.
SVC (1-0) built its lead to 27-7 midway through the second quarter on a 47-yard Lohman run, a 15-yard scoring pass from Cade Henjum to Molina and an 11-yard keeper by Henjum.
But penalties dictated the rest of the first half. The Warriors were flagged eight times for 105 yards in the half, most of which kept Saints drives alive.
Folsom, who also ran for 110 yards, hit Daniel Albright for a 7-yard touchdown with 51 seconds left. Following an interception by Garrett Cox, Folsom then hit Karl Schumacher from 17 yards out to make it a 27-21 halftime score.
Despite continuing penalties, SVC’s defense buckled down in the second half. Of Crean Lutheran’s five second-half drives, three resulted in turnovers on downs and one was halted by a Josiah Taufi interception.
Henjum broke loose for an 83-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Molina put the game away with a 1-yard run, which was set up by a 73-yard pass from Henjum to Savaii Cravens.
Henjum threw for 116 yards and added 144 rushing yards.
