IRVINE – Northwood used a fast start to help withstand a furious second-quarter rally by University to win, 42-28, Friday night at University High.

With the victory, the Timberwolves sit in third place in the Pacific Coast League and face Corona del Mar next week in their regular-season finale.

Northwood (7-2, 3-1) had a scorching start as quarterback Brian Abel took the first snap for a read-option touchdown run that went 48 yards.

The Timberwolves scored touchdowns on two more possessions as they built a comfortable 20-point lead.

Matt Abellaneda sparked a Trojans comeback with a 68-yard kickoff return that gave University some life. Abellaneda later capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run.

The Trojans (3-6, 0-4) forced a quick punt and on the next possession, quarterback Andre Campbell tossed a 52-yard TD pass to Michael Jung on third-and-18, making the score 20-14.

Momentum continued to shift when University’s Dakota Brooks pounced on an errant pitch by Abel at the Trojans’ 35-yard line. Abellaneda went on to score his second TD of the game on a 19-yard pass from Campbell that gave University a 21-20 lead.

The Timberwolves seized the lead back early in the third quarter when Barry Baker scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Timberwolves on a 63-yard pass from Abel. Northwood didn’t relinquish their advantage again.

Northwood’s Andy Clyde caught a 29-yard TD pass for a 34-21 lead.
