NEWPORT BEACH – St. Margaret’s started off Academy League play authoritatively topping Sage Hill, 44-6, Friday night at Sage Hill.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, but St. Margaret’s (6-0, 1-0) came close. After driving to the Sage Hill (3-4, 0-1) 17-yard-line, a 17-yard touchdown pass from senior Ryan O’Hare was nullified by a penalty and senior kicker Charlie Beall’s 34-yard field-goal attempt was blocked.

The Tartans made a change at quarterback in favor of sophomore George Krantz and he opened the scoring with a 16-yard pass to junior Nick Shanks. Two series later, Krantz gave way to senior running back Oscar Gomez. Gomez was a heavy contributor on the Tartans’ 80-yard drive and eventually scored on a 1-yard run. This set the tone for Gomez’s outstanding game as he rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

With time winding down in the second quarter, Beall lined up for a 39-yard field goal but St. Margaret’s faked the field goal and Beall ran a pitch for a 22-yard score as time expired.

St. Margaret’s kept the onslaught going with 23 straight points in the third quarter. It started with a 52-yard punt return from Shanks followed by two rushing scores by Gomez.
