ORANGE – The nonleague game between Orange and visiting Anaheim on Thursday at El Modena High featured more turnovers than scoring plays.

But the Colonists, who were playing their season opener, showed enough consistency on offense and were opportunistic enough to come away with an 18-0 victory.

The teams combined for seven turnovers, including four within a 39-second span in the fourth quarter.

Anaheim’s first two scores came off long drives.

The first was a 53-yard drive, capped with a 1-yard touchdown run from Kevin Montoya to give the Colonists a 6-0 lead. QB Brandon Lopez finished a 53-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring run to give Anaheim a 12-0 lead at halftime.

In the third, Lopez connected with Aaron Luna on a 27-yard scoring pass to complete the scoring.

Joel Montes led the Colonists with 95 yards on 11 carries, and Manny Covarrubias rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries.

Orange dropped to 0-2 and has yet to score.

The Panthers’ best chance to score Thursday came on a 16-play, 54-yard drive in the third quarter. But a penalty on fourth-and-1 from the Anaheim 14 pushed Orange back 5 yards and the Panthers failed to make the first down on the next play.
