IRVINE – Woodbridge’s boys basketball team was unable to slow down No. 2 seeded Glendora in the second round of the CIF 2AA playoffs on Tuesday night.

The Tartans led from the start on their way to a 56-31 victory at Woodbridge.

Glendora (25-4) was led by senior guard Brandon Brothers, who had 26 points and senior forward Robbie Miller, who had 15 points.

Brothers and Miller each sank five, 3-point field goals. Glendora moves on to quarterfinals.

“There is a reason why they are the No. 2 seed,” said Woodbridge coach John Halagan. “I thought defensively we were pretty solid but No. 31 (Miller) hits some deep shots and he is 6-foot-6 and shoots over guys. Their other kid (Brothers) is just an outstanding player. He’s hitting 24-footers.

“You got to give them credit. They made shots and we had some open looks. If you want to hang around and try and pull off an upset, you’ve got to make shots and when we got our open ones, they just didn’t drop for us tonight. But I can’t fault this group, I’ve really enjoyed coaching this team because they were all about the next guy.

“You always hate to see it end, but we got beat by a better ball club tonight.”

Woodbridge (13-15) was led by Sami Soufian, Anthony Coloma and Ty Calhoun, who had six points each.

Glendora jumped out to a 21-6 lead after one quarter. Both teams struggled to score early in the second quarter.

Woodbridge scored the final points of the first half when Coloma scored a lay-up off a steal by Evan Maggard to cut the Glendora lead to 27-16 at halftime.

But the Warriors could not cut into the lead. Glendora led, 39-23, after three quarters and eventually moved out to a 24-point lead early in the final quarter.

“They shot it better, they’re longer and stronger than us and they deserve to move on,” Halagan said. “I wish them nothing but the best of luck, but I love the way our guys fought until the end. I was really happy with this senior group all year.”
