SANTA ANA – Woodbridge forced six turnovers, including a pair of fumbles and took over on downs on three other occasions to defeat Segerstrom, 28-7, in a nonleague game Friday night at Segerstrom.
The Warriors (3-2) capitalized after taking over on downs just 4:15 into the second quarter on their own 32-yard line. Junior Alex Young closed out a 15-play drive that lasted 6:28 on a two-yard run with 1:17 left in the first half as Woodbridge took the lead for the first time in the game, 14-7.
Earlier, Young tied it at 7-7 on his 98-yard kickoff return with 2:24 left in the first.
George Ortega, a junior, ended the shortest series (four plays, 49 seconds) of the opening half on a 9-yard carry with 2:36 to play in the first to give the Jaguars (1-4) a 7-0 advantage.
Ortega led all rushers with 132 yards on 20 carries while Marcos Avalos completed 7 of 12 passes for 96 yards with an interception.
Ryan Eisendrath ended a potential Segerstrom scoring drive with just 23 seconds left until halftime with an interception at the Woodbridge 5.
Warriors quarterback Michael Pritchett went 7-for-18 passing for 102 yards and a TD and Zach Kennedy had six receptions for 72 yards a touchdown.
The Warriors extended their winning streak to three games and have defeated the Jaguars in four of their five meetings since facing each other since 2010. Also, Woodbridge has outscored Segerstrom, 125-55, in those four victories.
Segerstrom opens its Golden West League schedule against Santa Ana at Santa Ana Stadium on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Woodbridge plays its first Pacific Coast League game of the season at University on Oct. 10.
