Morgan Wilson, the captain of the Esperanza girls tennis team last year, was in critical condition at UC Irvine Medical Center on Wednesday after suffering cardiac arrest while working out, according to one of the school’s coaches.

Wilson, 17, was at a park in Anaheim on Tuesday morning, preparing for a private tennis lesson when she collapsed during a warm-up run, said Rich Meddelin, the school’s track coach. Paramedics were able to revive Wilson at the scene before transporting her to UCI.

“She’s in (an induced) coma,” Meddelin said, who added that doctors told Wilson’s parents, Debbie and Scott, that the first 48 hours after the incident would be crucial to her survival.

The school will hold a prayer meeting for Wilson on Thursday at the school. It will begin at 10 a.m. on the tennis courts.

“Good kid, a really good kid,” Meddelin said of Wilson. “Really well liked. … A great sense of humor, and a hard worker.”

Wilson was also a member of the school’s varsity track team last year, competing in several events, including the 100 meters, the hurdles and long jump.
