Wilson High’s boys golf team finished sixth in its prestigious Champions Invitational, a three-round tournament won by Servite on Saturday in Indio.

The ninth annual event, won last year by Wilson, featured 40 high school golf teams from California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Missouri and Canada. The format is five players score the best four totals for each of the three rounds.

Servite scored 927 under the format, which is a bit different than CIF scoring, with Loyola and Corona Del Mar tied for second at 928. Archbishop Mitty (935) and Diamond Bar (936) finished just ahead of Wilson (937). Will Zalatoris of Plano, Texas, easily won the individual championship, shooting a 208 that was 11 strokes ahead of K.K. Limbhasut of Loma Linda.

Senior Harold Calubid was Wilson’s top finisher, shooting a 226 to tie for 13th. Calubid finished with an 80 on Saturday, an extremely windy day in the desert that drove up scores for everyone.

Wilson senior Ryder Epson tied for 21st at 230. Wilson’s Nick Gregor, a nonscorer for the team competition, finished 30th with a 232. Sophomore Hunter Epson was Wilson’s next highest scorer, shooting a 240 to tie for 63rd.

On Thursday, Wilson has another league match against Cabrillo at El Dorado.
