For the first time in a long time, Western opens the boys basketball season this week without Joe Aihara.
Aihara resigned as Western’s coach on Oct. 31. He had coached the Pioneers for 16 seasons.
Aihara declined to describe the reasons for his departure from the basketball program at Western, where he remains on the teaching staff.
“I do wish I was still coaching there,” Aihara said Monday.
Dan Davidson is coaching the Western varsity boys basketball team. Davidson also is the school’s varsity football coach.
