Los Alamitos moved up to the No. 1 spot in the Orange Country girls soccer poll this week after winning last week’s Excalibur tournament.

The Griffins didn’t allow a goal in their five games in the tournament and scored two goals in four of the five games.

Los Alamitos starts league play today at home against Fountain Valley and plays No. 7 Huntington Beach on Thursday. The Griffins beat the Oilers, 1-0, in the Excalibur quarterfinals.

WRESTLING

There will be some new faces in some of the county’s wrestling lineups this week as transfers become eligible to compete for the first time this season.

For Calvary Chapel, Easton Amuro and Richard Gurule will be eligible. Easton was the Empire League champion last year at Cypress at 106 pounds, while Gurule was the 126-pound champion in the Sunset League for Los Alamitos.

Sonora’s Steven Gunritz becomes eligible. He is a transfer from La Mirada, where was a Suburban League finalist a year ago.

GIRLS WATER POLO

Several girls water polo teams begin league play this week.

Troy (6-3) opens defense of its Freeway League title by playing La Habra (4-9) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Fullerton College. …

Laguna Beach coach Ethan Damato predicted before the season that attacker Claire Sonne would become a breakout player. The Cal-bound senior proved her coach right last week while helping the Breakers capture the Holiday Cup.

BOYS SOCCER

Sonora became the first Freeway League team this season to win a December tournament, beating Dominguez, 3-1, in the championship match of the Marina Tournament. The Raiders eliminated the host Vikings in the semifinals.

Sonora won all five of its matches in the three-day tournament, and oustcored its opponents, 12-4, during pool play.

Blake Tourville and Jose Valenzuela led the way for the Raiders. Tourville finished with four goals and five assists, and Valenzuela added five goals and three assists.
