OCVarsity O.C. top 10 for Week 8

A weekly poll of O.C. media members:

1. Mater Dei (6-1, 99 poll points)

Monarchs lost to St. John Bosco, 42-21, after trailing 42-0. That says more about Bosco, which will go 5-0 in the Trinity league, than it does about Mater Dei, which still looks like the No. 2 team in that ferocious league. This week: vs. Servite at Angel Stadium, Friday

2. Mission Viejo (8-0, 91)

Brocktoberfest! Quarterback Brock Johnson threw three second-half touchdown passes in the Diablos’ 39-33 comeback win over Tesoro in a crucial South Coast League game … and there’s another coming right up. This week: at San Juan Hills, Friday

3. Orange Lutheran (4-3, 79)

Lancers beat Servite, 37-36, with a touchdown on the final play of the game. Lutheran’s losses are to De La Salle of Concord, Centennial of Corona and Mater Dei, which are ranked No. 1, 2 and 4 in California respectively: This week: vs. Santa Margarita at Orange Coast College, Friday

4. Santa Margarita (5-2, 65)

Backup quarterback Richard Wagner made plenty of big plays and Alec Stewart and Tanner Matthews led the defense as the Eagles beat JSerra, 28-21 to even their Trinity League record at 1-1. This week: vs. Orange Lutheran at Orange Coast College, Friday

5. Tesoro (6-2, 56)

Devon Modster’s throwing shoulder seemed fine as he passed for 415 yards in the Titans’ tough 39-33 loss to Mission Viejo. This week: at Dana Hills, Friday.

6. Servite (3-4, 47)

If you want some fun, go to a Servite game in the Trinity League. Friars beat JSerra by one point in final seconds and lost to Orange Lutheran by one point in final seconds. This week: vs. Mater Dei at Angel Stadium, Friday

7. San Juan Hills (7-0, 37)

Another fine night for Patrick O’Brien who completed 23 of 28 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns in 40-36 South Coast League win over El Toro. He will need similar production for the next game. This week: vs. Mission Viejo, Friday

8. La Habra (6-1, 35)

Mathematically they didn’t, but realistically Highlanders clinched another Freeway League championship with their robust 48-14 win over Buena Park. This week: at Fullerton, Friday

9. JSerra (5-2, 30)

Lions lost by one touchdown to Santa Margarita after losing by one point to Servite, and are in some deep mud with a 0-2 Trinity League record. It doesn’t get easier from here. This week: vs. St. John Bosco at Cerritos College, Friday

10. San Clemente (5-2, 8)

Tritons did not play last week as they prepared for a stretch of Sea View League games in an effort to retain their league championship. This week: vs. Laguna Hills, Friday
