OCVarsity O.C. top 10 for Week 6

STAFF WRITER

A weekly poll of O.C. media members:

1. Mater Dei (5-0, 100 poll points)

Coming off of the bye week following a successful run through nonleague games, it is time for what Monarchs coach Bruce Rollinson has called “the weekly wars” of the Trinity League. This week: vs. Orange Lutheran, at Orange Coast College, Friday

2. Mission Viejo (6-0, 89)

Diablos, off last week, have won 29 games in a row in the South Coast League. There are a couple of league opponents who could snap that streak this year. This week: vs. Dana Hills, Friday

3. Santa Margarita (4-1, 72)

Eagles spent their bye week getting ready for a heck of a challenge, their league opener against St. John Bosco, which is averaging 64 points a game. This week: vs. St. John Bosco, at Saddleback College, Friday

4. Orange Lutheran (3-2, 64)

After losses to state’s Nos. 1- and 2-ranked teams, Lancers beat state No. 9 Vista Murrieta, 29-14. They get state No. 4 team next. This week: vs. Mater Dei, at Orange Coast College, Friday

5. JSerra (5-0, 60)

Lions’ average margin of victory is 31 points, which is unlikely to continue over the next few weeks. This week: vs. Servite, at Cerritos College, Friday

6. Tesoro (5-1, 53)

Titans lost star QB Devon Modster to injury in third quarter, receiver Carter Jaenichen stepped in and kept the momentum in win over San Clemente. This week: vs. El Toro, Friday

7. San Juan Hills (6-0, 40)

Stallions averaging 48 points a game, including a 61-24 win over Beckman last week; averaging half that many in South Coast League would be impressive. This week: bye

8. La Habra (4-1, 42)

Highlanders did no play last week, giving them time to prepare for what should be one of the more challenging groups of Freeway League teams in many years, perhaps ever. This week: vs. Sonora, Friday

9. Servite (2-3, 22)

Friars had last week off and perhaps needed it after enduring a typically tough nonleague campaign. But the next few weeks certainly won’t be that much easier. This week: vs. JSerra, at Cerritos College, Friday

10. San Clemente (4-2, 6)

Titans lost to Tesoro, 31-22, but still looked more than good enough to win the Sea View League championship, even good enough to go 4-0 in league. This week: at Capistrano Valley, Friday

Also receiving votes: Edison (2-3, 3); El Toro (4-2, 1)
