Monarchs remained No. 1 on the ballots of nine of the 10 voters on the media panel after they lost Trinity League opener to the state’s top-ranked team, St. John Bosco, 28-25.

Andrew Acosta’s field goal finished a 28-25 win over Orange Lutheran and kept the Friars at No. 2 in the county poll. Their losses were to nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas and De La Salle of Concord.

Lions’ ascendancy continued with 35-28 win over Santa Margarita. They have beaten Santa Margarita twice in a row, have won three-straight Trinity League games for the first time.

Eagles lost to surging JSerra, 35-28, although they had a 14-0 lead in the first half. Conner Bianchini had eight catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

Lancers made a fine second-half comeback effort but still lost to Servite, 28-25, on field goal in final moments.

Top-ranked public school team in county football opened South Coast League action with 30-21 win over El Toro to extend victory streak to six games.

Sea Kings beat Irvine, 21-7, in Pacific Coast League opener to push league winning streak to 11 games as quarterback Chase Garbers passed for 166 yards and ran for 112 yards.

Brock Johnson threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Connor Hill, in Diablos’ 34-7 win over Dana Hills in a South Coast League opener.

Griffins opened Sunset League play with convincing 34-6 win over Fountain Valley as Jack Telenko threw five touchdown passes.
