Edison begins its usual back-to-back Trinity League challenge this week. The Chargers play Servite at Cerritos College on Friday. They play Mater Dei next week.

Few will give the Chargers a chance in those games. Of course, few gave the San Diego Chargers a chance this past weekend against Seattle and look what happened.

Edison and Coach Dave White are boldly going where few public school teams go. Athletes and teams get better by playing better competition.

Edison ducks nobody. That’s one reason it is among the more respected football programs in Southern California.

FREEWAY JAM

Four Freeway League teams are 3-0: Buena Park, Sonora, Sunny Hills and Troy. Fullerton is 2-1.

League favorite La Habra is 1-2, with the losses to high-quality Mission Viejo and El Toro.

The league is a cumulative 15-3. All six Freeway teams have winnable games this week.

There is a depth to this league not seen in many years.

TITANS LIFT OFF

Tesoro’s 28-14 win over then-state ranked Upland last week was an attention-getter.

The Titans are above South Coast League rival Mission Viejo in the county top 10, a rare event.

They have a couple of tough nonleague games coming up, against Corona del Mar and San Clemente, before playing Mission Viejo in a league opener Oct. 17. The win over Upland might have launched Tesoro toward a memorable season.

ALL-O.C. QB

The competition for All-Orange County first-team quarterback honors was expected to be tight. But not this tight.

Nobody has separated himself from the talented pack that begins, but doesn’t end, with Eric Barriere (La Habra), KJ Costello (Santa Margarita), Sam Darnold (San Clemente), Devon Modster (Tesoro), Nick Robinson (JSerra), Trey Tinsley (El Toro) and Travis Waller (Servite). That list is in alphabetical order, so don’t get any ideas.

And don’t think somebody not on that list won’t emerge as a candidate in coming weeks.

FRYER’S TOP 25

Here is how I rank county football teams 1-25 this week: 1. Mater Dei (2-0); 2. Servite (2-1); 3. Santa Margarita (3-0); 4. Orange Lutheran 2-1; 5. JSerra (3-0); 6. Mission Viejo (1-2); 7. Corona del Mar (3-0); 8. Tesoro (2-1); 9. Los Alamitos (2-0); 10. Edison (3-0); 11. El Toro (2-1); 12. La Habra (1-2); 13. San Clemente (3-0); 14. Newport Harbor (1-1); 15. Valencia (2-0); 16. Villa Park (1-1); 17. Trabuco Hills (1-2); 18. Fountain Valley (2-1); 19. Yorba Linda (0-2); 20. Tustin (3-0); 21. Buena Park (3-0); 22. Troy (3-0); 23. Huntington Beach (0-3); 24. Cypress (2-0); 25. Foothill (1-1).

THIS WEEK

Here are some of the better matchups on the schedule this week:

Cypress vs. Troy at Fullerton High, Thursday: Both teams are undefeated and in the top 25. Quinten Pounds of Cypress (2-0) is one of the county’s better all-around players. Troy (3-0) has its best team in several years.

Corona del Mar at Newport Harbor, Friday: The annual Battle of the Bay was dominated by Newport Harbor (1-1) for many years. The ascendancy of Corona del Mar (3-0) changed that.

St. Bonaventure of Ventura vs. JSerra at Saddleback College, Friday: JSerra has more “let’s see how good you really are” games than anybody. This is another one. St. Bonaventure (2-1) is in the state top 25, at No. 13. JSerra (3-0) is No. 14.

Laguna Hills vs. Woodbridge at University High, Friday: Laguna Hills (1-1) might feel that it would fit better in the Pacific Coast League than it does in the Coast View Conference. The Hawks scheduled like it, playing three Pacific Coast League teams in a row this month. Woodbridge (1-2) might have turned a corner with its win over Garden Grove last week.

Garden Grove vs. Pacifica at Bolsa Grande High, Friday: Pacifica (1-1) ended a five-game losing streak with a win over Estancia last week. The Mariners have big linemen and speed at the skill positions. Garden Grove (1-1) played well in a season-opening win over Westminster then struggled last week in a loss to Woodbridge. This is a progress-or-regress game for the Argonauts and Mariners.
