Mater Dei linebacker Ronald Nickerson (9) and teammate Jacob Welch (15) have a reason to celebrate this week: The Monarchs held onto the No. 1 spot in the OCVarsity O.C. Top 10.

Mater Dei’s 63-0 rout of Villa Park kept the Monarchs firmly in the top position of the Register Media Poll. The Monarchs were No. 1 on the ballots of all 10 members.

Again, Orange County’s five Trinity League teams occupy the top five positions. JSerra, which beat Chino Hills last week, moved up one position to No. 4. Last week’s No. 4, Orange Lutheran, is at No. 5 after a close loss to Centennial of Corona.

The first 0-2 start this century for Mission Viejo has the Diablos at No. 9, their lowest position in the top 10 this century.

Corona del Mar, a 37-0 winner over Dana Hills last week, is the top-ranked public school team at No. 6. The bottom half of the top 10 is made up of public school teams.

Los Alamitos, at No. 8 last week, advanced to No. 7 after its season-opening, 41-9 win over Paramount.

Two top-10 teams play each other this week: No. 10 El Toro plays No. 6 Corona del Mar on Friday at Newport Harbor High.

Last week, two schools, Newport Harbor and Tesoro, were in the “also receiving votes” on-the-bubble category. They are in that category again this week. Added to the category are Fountain Valley and Tesoro.
