Veteran Santa Ana Valley girls water polo coach Fred Lammers, a former O.C. Register coach of the year who has spent nearly four decades at the school, will retire in June, he announced.

Lammers, 62, has spent 38 years at Santa Ana Valley as a biology teacher and aquatics coach. He has coached water polo and swimming at the school but is best known for leading the Falcons to consecutive CIF-SS Division 7 titles in 2011 and 2012.

The CIF titles highlighted an 18-year run as the girls water polo coach.

The ’11 Falcons became the first girls team from Valley to capture a CIF title in any sport. Lammers was selected the The Register’s girls coach of the year for 2011 and followed up by claiming another CIF title in 2012.

A pair of Santa Ana Valley alumni will take over the Falcons’ water polo programs: Peter Sophabmixay (girls) and Ricky Carrillo (boys). Veteran assistant Eric Terwiliger will remain with the water polo programs.
