NEW POOL EARMARKED FOR SUNNY HILLS

Sunny Hills will break ground on a new 45-meter pool in June, Lancers water polo coach Keith Nighswonger said.

“For water polo, you can run two courses, and that’s what we wanted to do,” he said last week after the Lancers’ boys match at Troy.

Sunny Hills’ current pool is leaking but the Lancers are able to practice at the facility, Nighswonger said. “It’s in hospice care right now,” the veteran coach said.

EAGLES RISING

Santa Margarita’s boys water polo team climbed to a season-high seventh in the Orange County rankings Monday but face a difficult assignment this week.

The Eagles (16-4, 2-1) play host to top-ranked Mater Dei in a Trinity League game Thursday at 5 p.m.

Santa Margarita earned its promotion in the rankings and the Trinity League standings with a 13-9 victory last week against Servite behind five goals from Spencer Lupin and four by Sam Slobodien. Goalie Ryan Melosini added a few key saves.

On Friday, the Eagles will begin defense of their title at the two-day Steve Pal Memorial tournament. The top-four seeds are Servite, Mira Costa, Santa Margarita and Righetti.

The host schools are Santa Margarita, Northwood, Beckman and Villa Park. The final is scheduled for Saturday night at Santa Margarita at 7 p.m.

TOUGH BACK-TO-BACK FOR MATER DEI

Mater Dei also is playing a challenging schedule this week. The Monarchs play host to Loyola (18-5) of Los Angeles on Wednesday at Corona del Mar at 6:15 p.m. The Monarchs are playing at Corona del Mar because their pool is down for repairs, Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman said.

GRIFFINS ROLLING INTO SHOWDOWN

Los Alamitos beat Dana Hills, 10-9, last week to move to ninth in the O.C. rankings. The Griffins play Huntington Beach on Wednesday at Newport Harbor at 6:05 p.m. for first place in the Sunset League.
