MISSION VIEJO – It was a busy, yet satisfying day for Woodbridge junior Gabe Warner on Saturday at the Trabuco Hills Invitational.

Early in the day, Warner posted the best time in the 400-meter run with a 48.42. Later, he came back in the 200 and posted a 21.59 for his second first-place finish of the event at Trabuco Hills High.

He needed a late charge in the 200 to pull off the victory.

“He was ahead of me,” Warner said of his position in the last turn. “I don’t have very good starts, but I usually catch up at the end because people usually slow down and lose gas and I just keep on going.

“I didn’t think it was going to happen, but it did.”

Warner edged Damion Marshall of Great Oak down the stretch. Warner returned in the final event of the day and as the anchor leg, rallied the Warriors to a third-place finish in the 1,600 relay.

Tesoro’s Mitchell Bland also had a busy day. Bland was first in the triple jump (47-2), the high jump (6-8) and finished second in the long jump to JSerra’s Dante Pettis. Bland earned Field Athlete of the Meet honors.

Santa Margarita’s Austin Tinsley was second in the 110 high hurdles, but came back strong in the 300 hurdles, posting a time of 37.55, narrowly missing the meet record of 37.50.

“That’s the best race I’ve ever run,” Tinsley said. “Coach told me before to go for it. I’ve had a couple of bad races, but he told me to go for it and run it like it was a practice. I got a good start out of the box. I got the first two hurdles under my belt and I pumped all the way to the end.”

Orange Lutheran’s Carl Johansson cleared 16 feet in the pole vault to finish first. On his final attempt at 16-6, Johansson cleared the bar going up, but hit it coming down.

“I wanted the meet record,” Johansson said. “I wanted to go to 17 feet. I tried it a few times and I’ve been close. I felt good today. I had a good jump. It is frustrating, but also, I had it, so it is motivating too.”

Tesoro’s Amanda Gehrich (10:44.78) won the girls 3,200 and Woodbridge’s Jackson Marshall (9:21.99) was first in the boys 3,200.

El Modena’s Sydney Gidabuday won the 1,600 race with a time of 4:18.37. He finished second in the 800 at 1:57.24.

Beckman’s Michael Hamill ran a 10.79 in the 100 meters.
