The past couple of years, the Troy girls golf team didn’t perform at its best when it mattered the most. So this year, Coach Jerry Cowgill added an October match against Walnut, which finished tied for second at last year’s CIF State Championship.

The No. 3 Warriors came up short Thursday, losing their nonleague match to Walnut, 194-197. Ysabel Tran, Laura Smith and Beth Lillie each carded a 2-over-par 38 on the Zaharias Course at Pacific Palms Resort to lead Troy (7-1). Lillie is now 6-under par for he week after posting a pair of 4-under rounds on Monday and Tuesday and is 9 under in her last three starts for the Warriors.

Smith closed her round on the front nine on the Zaharias Course with a 10-foot birdie putt. Felicia Chang added a 39 as four of the six Troy players broke 40.

“This helps,” Cowgill said. “I like what we are doing now. I think we are playing well at the right time.”

Katherine Muzi medaled for the Mustangs (17-0) with 2-under-par 34 on a day when Walnut was missing three of its best players. One was on a recruiting trip. The other two were attending a funeral.

“For us to be where we were with our top four and playing under that stress knowing they were a good team, I am happy with how we did,” Cowgill said. “You hate a lose, but I kind of expected them (Walnut) to shoot better but this gives us hope.”
