BOYS VOLLEYBALL

By design, the month of March is a tough one for Saddleback Valley Christian’s boys volleyball team.

So far, things are off to a great start.

SVC won the Foothill Varsity Classic on Saturday. This week, the Warriors have nonleague matches against No. 3 Beckman (Tuesday) and 10th-ranked Santa Margarita (Wednesday) before heading to Santa Barbara for the Dos Pueblos Tournament (Friday and Saturday).

“We’ve pushed really hard for March to have a tough schedule,” SVC coach Ryan Van Rensselaer said. “This is our toughest week and I just want us to continue to be healthy and continue to grow tighter as a team.” . . .

The Orange County Championships begin Friday at various locations. Saturday will set up the finals for Divisions 1 and 2, with the finals set for Monday night at Edison.

BOYS LACROSSE

Moments after its 14-4 victory Saturday against visiting Brighton of Utah, the Foothill boys lacrosse team had a chance to chat with NFL Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown.

Brown, who also earned All-American honors in lacrosse at Syracuse, is friends with the father of Brighton coach Brandon Horoba.

“He talked about having a passion for the game, being respectful for the game and the opponent,” Foothill coach Jon Fox said. “He took some questions and talked about how the game (of lacrosse) helped him.

“It was unexpected. They weren’t sure if he was going to make it.”
