WESTMINSTER – Westminster guard Tyler Burch entered the postseason as arguably the hottest scorer in the county. In his previous three games, Burch had been nearly unstoppable, averaging more than 47 points per contest and scoring a school-record 56 points on Feb. 11.

On Friday night against Villa Park, Burch’s streak came to an end.

After he connected on his first shot of the game – a 25-foot 3-pointer that he was fouled on – Villa Park turned up the pressure and dominated on defense to earn a 64-46 first-round win at Westminster High and knock the Lions out of the CIF-SS Division 1A playoffs.

“The strategy was to make sure that we made Tyler earn every basket,” Villa Park coach Kevin Reynolds said. “He couldn’t get any open looks. We trapped him when we had to, but we were not going to give him any looks.”

The Spartans (11-16) shot 9 for 16 on 3-point attempts and led the game nearly from start to finish. They were able to hold the Lions (10-17) to their lowest point total in seven games.

Villa Park also outrebounded Westminster by 14 and had six blocked shots.

“Our size overmatched them a little bit,” Reynolds said. “When they had to adjust to our size inside, it left shooters open on the perimeter, and we shot the ball really well.”

Villa Park will be home against top-seeded Loyola in the second round on Tuesday.

The Spartans had a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double figures. Myles Franklin was a perfect 4 for 4 beyond the 3-point line and led the way with 14 points. Daniel Hernandez had 13, Ilan Ezra had 11 and JoJo Bush had 10 points with eight rebounds.

Burch finished with 13 points for Westminster on 3-for-15 shooting. Buddy Alton led the Lions with 17 points and six rebounds.

Villa Park went winless this season in the Crestview League, which sent all four of its teams to the playoffs and had two teams (Foothill and Esperanza) ranked among the top 10 teams in Orange County.

“It’s a growing process,” Reynolds said. “We know how good our league is, and we know what we’re capable of when we’re mentally right.”
