The number was one that Villa Park coach Chris Salio didn’t really likes to see, one that was a bit too high to compete with the top boys golf programs in the county.

But then considering where the Spartans were playing, and then the score didn’t seem all that bad.

Diamond Bar Golf Courses just might be one of the most difficult sites used in high school golf. The greens are hard and always fast.

“It’s a trick little course,” Salio said. “We don’t play it very often, and the greens were really quick today.”

Only two of the six players who teed off for the Spartans in Tuesday’s Century League match finished in the 30s.

Matt Karchefski medaled for the second time this season, shooting a 1-over-par 37 to lead No. 7 Villa Park to a 196-225 victory against Brea Olinda. Kyle DeSilva added a 2-over 38 for Villa Park

“I like where we are at now. I thought we would be a little better coming out of the chute, but it just didn’t happen,” Salio said. “I like the way that we are progressing. We are starting to come around.”

On Monday Villa Park had four players shoot in the 30s to post a 189-194 victory against Foothill at Tustin Ranch Golf Club. Austin Trcka led the Spartans with a 2-under 34 in that match.

And then last week, Villa Park beat Corona del Mar by eight strokes at Green River Golf Course.

“With that win (the one against Corona del Mar) it kind of got us going,” Salio said. “We have been playing pretty well since then.”

The greens at Diamond Bar were playing especially quick on Tuesday, and even a perfect shot, like the one that Jai Dolwani hit off the tee on the uphill par 3 ninth left players with long birdie putts.

Dolwani played a draw into the strong afternoon breeze and the ball landed about 2-feet to the right of the pin, but it released and rolled to the back of the green. He was faced with a 30-foot putt with about 6 inches of left-to-right break, but he drained it for a birdie.
