Marina keeps fighting, knocks off Edison

SPECIAL TO OCVARSITY.COM

HUNTINGTON BEACH – With the Sunset League championship still up for grabs, Marina came through with a much-needed victory over Edison, 7-1, on Friday at Marina.

With the victory, the Vikings (15-9, 9-4) stayed one game behind first-place Los Alamitos (17-6, 10-3) with two league games remaining. The Griffins hold the tiebreaker over the Vikings by winning the teams' season series.

The Vikings got off to a hot start Friday, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Austin Sojoka hit a solo home run and was followed by back-to-back doubles by Jake Bauers and Tyler Mildenberg.

That was all pitcher Jack Westermeyer would need to beat the Chargers for the first time this season. He pitched all seven innings and gave up just one run.

After the Chargers (10-12, 8-5) scored a run in the third to make it 2-1, the Vikings came back and scored three in the bottom half of the inning. Two of the runs scored on a double by Mildenberg.

Westermeyer shut down the potent Chargers offense the rest of the way.

The Vikings scored two runs in fifth. Mildenberg went 2 for 2 with three RBIs.

The Vikings end the regular season next week with two games against Huntington Beach, while the Chargers end the season with a two-game series against the Griffins.
