OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
CAPISTRANO VALLEY CHRISTIAN EAGLES
Coach: Rick Curtis
Last season: 4-6 overall, 3-2 league
Scouting report: It’s a new start at Capistrano Valley Christian. A new coach in Rick Curtis, formerly of Santa Margarita, comes with a new coaching staff and a new head of schools for CVC. There are only six returning starters for the Eagles, including just two on defense, but they have two key returners at the center of each unit. Senior Dawson Piper is back at quarterback after throwing for 1,889 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. Senior Nolan Kahal will lead the defense at middle linebacker after an all-league performance last season. There is also a lot of quickness on the team, highlighted by senior running back Garin Green. The biggest challenge for CVC to overcome is an inexperienced offensive line and a lack of experience overall.
Bottom line: Capistrano Valley Christian has enough talent to compete for a playoff spot. It will be up to Curtis, Piper and Kahal to help the talent and youth shine through.
Players to watch: Dawson Piper, QB, Sr.; Nolan Kahal, LB/RB, Sr.; Garin Green, RB/DB, Sr.; Andrew Beres, WR/LB, Jr.; Kegan Bacick, WR/DB, So.
