OCVarsity’s season preview for 2016:
SANTA ANA VALLEY FALCONS
Coach: Larry Mohr
Last season: 5-6-1 overall, 4-1 league
Scouting report: The Falcons are experienced, loaded with speed and poised to wrestle the Orange League championship away from Katella. Nine players return on offense, including senior wide receivers Sherman Thomas and Malcolm Wesley, who combined to score nine touchdowns last season. Also returning is Chris Hernandez, the team MVP and the Orange League’s back of the year. Coach Larry Mohr said the Falcons’ lineup will include two Division 1 prospects – junior quarterback Jason Wilkinson and senior defensive end Juan Medina. Wilkinson appeared in four games for Valley last season, completing 71.3 percent of his 80 passes for 658 yards and five touchdowns. Medina has added 25 pounds since being an all-league selection in 2015.
Bottom line: The Falcons have good size on the offensive line, as tackles Johan Palacios and Chuy Garcia each tip the scale at 300 pounds. Mohr calls this the fastest team he has ever had, so a league championship is in reach.
Players to watch: Chuy Garcia, T, Sr.; Chris Hernandez, RB, Sr.; Johan Palacios, T, Sr.; Juan Romero, RB, Sr.; Sherman Thomas, WR, Sr.; Malcolm Wesley, WR, Jr.; Jason Wilkinson, QB, Jr.
